How do I edit the IE 11 dictionary

why won't document.getElementyById work in IE11 on Windows 10 - what is dispHTMLDocument?

$

I have a script that does the most simple thing in JavaScript - finds an element in the DOM using getElementById. I have a simple "input" button - <input type="button" element on the page with an onclick event - which calls a script function.  The first line of the function is  var elem = document.getElementById('[elementname]'); This all runs fine on most machines and most browsers - except IE11 running on windows 10 on some computers.  When these users visit the webpage using IE11 on windows 10 and click the input button, it runs the onclick script and fails on the first line of code.  On one persons computer, it shows an error that says something like document object doesn't have a method named getElementById.  On another persons computer it doesn't even show an error - it just tries to execute the first line and immediately stops running any script and aborts back to the page without ever throwing an error.  When I look at the document object on my machine (win 7 IE11) it evaluates "document" as "object" and "HTMLDocument".  When I evaluate the document object on computers that fail, it evaluates "document" as "object" and "dispHTMLDocument".  Not sure what dispHTMLDocument is and I have no idea why it doesn't recognize the getElementById method.

I need some kind of fix for this - there is key functionality that these users can't run... is there any way to convert the dispHTMLDocument into an HTMLDocument?  Is there a browser setting I can change to fix this problem?  Can I ask them to install or upgrade something - like a java version - to fix this?

I don't even know where to start.  :(  Thanks for any help!

Internet Explorer User Agent Incompatibility

$

Hello,

I have a web application in cloud which recently encountered unexpected security blocks due to user agent variations during a user's valid session. When we monitored the server's log, we found out the following

1) The user logged in from IE and supplied the following UAS:

Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 10.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/7.0)

2) At a certain point of their request, the UAS changed to:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko

I have had a look in the documentation about platform, rendering engine versions here:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537503.aspx

After reading through this, I am not sure how this is making any sense. By your documentation it seems to suggest that:

1) The user's PC is originally on Windows 7 (64-bit) but using Internet Explorer 10 (32-bit version) with Trident 7.0 Engine.

2) At a totally random point of their session on the website, the browser is now identifying itself as IE11 since it's supplying rv:11.0 token. Also, like Gecko seems to suggest that the IE11 behaviour is being promoted?

Please note that IE is the only browser that radically changes this User Agent String as such. No other browser currently does that during a web login session. The only exception is Firefox version upgrade scenario, which triggers a "Playback" of your login sessions on the last opened tabs. However, if the user closes and reopen the browser to log back in, the problem doesn't occur.

I believe this is nothing related to feature detection and can send misleading/false security warnings to a lot of firewalls/applications. Unless this is a documented behaviour (in which case, please point me in the right direction) - Why does this happen?

Kindest Regards,

Viewing TIF Image in Webpage

I'm having difficulties with viewing a TIF image as part of an application we're supporting.

We are expecting that when accessing a link to a TIF stored within our DMS, we would be able to view the TIF image.  Instead of this happening, the encoded data for the TIF is appearing (e.g. provided below).

I have tried disabling MIME sniffing within Internet Explorer's settings as I have seem this suggested from general googling of the issue, but this did not seem to work.

We are currently using IE 11.0.9600.

Any idea of what is happening and how to resolve/work around this problem would be greatly received.

Example of what is seen instead of the TIF image:

[IE 11] window.open popup gets 'closed' attribute 'true' when opening pdf

$

Hello there.

I'm having trouble with keeping control of my locally opened popup when opening pdf in adobe reader (newest version) in IE 11 on win 8.1.

if you try to do this:

var popup = window.open('mysite.com?pdf=123', 'test', 'width=600')

Lets say, I am calling this popup from mysite.com js script (same domain) and mysite.com?pdf=123 returns PDF file with content disposition inline so it opens inside the popup. If you would do something like that in parent window:

(function watchdog() {

console.log(popup.closed);

window.setTimeout(watchdog, 100)

})()

For some time it logs false which is correct, but when adobe plugin fires up and pdf is loaded inside it, this watchdog function logs true (which is a lie) and I lose control over it. All other modern browsers also forbid me from accessing the popup Window object when it loads adobe pdf plugin which is fine, but I can always access the 'closed' attribute and in my opinion it shouldnt say 'true' when the popup is visually opened.

ALSO... I noticed that if I close the popup fast enough, my parent window sometimes crashes. Is there any way to access crash logs for IE 11?

If anything is not yet clear I can prepare a test site to show the problem.

IE8 will not open MSDN site.

I have a computer running Win XP and IE8. It is an old machine and so i don't want to upgrade the OS or buy a new

computer. I installed vb.net 2010 Express as it is the most recent version which will run on XP.  The IDE uses a

help system which depends on Internet Explorer.  All the URLs the system needs to display are at

https://msdn.microsoft.com/.  The help system will not display the pages...

I have found by copying and pasting the URLs the help was trying to display into Firefox, Chrome and IE that they

open fine with Firefox and Chrome but not with IE8.  Of course I have somewhat newer versions of the stand alone

browsers, though they can no longer be upgraded either.

IE8 opens other sites without a problem, but not MSDN.  Is MSDN no longer compatible with IE8 or is there another

issue at work?  Has anybody else had this issue?

I would try to install the help files locally but I don't have the space. So far all I can do is copy and paste

the URLs into an exterior browser.

Thanks!

Side Issue: Before vb.net 2010 Express I installed vb.net 2005 Express which worked fine, help and all, but while

MS will still let you download vb.net 2005 Express, they will no longer provide you with a registration code to

finalize the installation.  Registering this product would also solve my problem.

New bug in IE11 -- scrolling position:fixed + background-image elements jitters badly.

visit the following page in IE10 and IE11, and use your mouse wheel to scroll the page:

http://www.oussamaharb.com/

In IE <= 10, Safari, Chrome, and FireFox, the header section of that page stays put when scrolling.  However, only in IE11, when you scroll the page the the header jumps around and jitters.  Essentially IE11 will do this on any div with a fixed background image.

Note the jitter does not happen if you grab the scrollbar with the cursor and move it up and down (which people rarely do).  Some sort of bug when using mouse wheel has been introduced in IE11.

IE11 fast clearing of large dropdown/select

$

I have read a lot of semi-related posts and am still having real issues dynamically clearing a big dropdown select in IE11 (1000+ items) quickly without error, no matter what I try.  This issue does not show up in Chrome and other browsers...

Try 1: Jquery .empty().  This does the trick but works slowly creating a lot of time lag.

Try 2:
var dd = document.getElementById('dropdown');
dd[0].innerHTML = '';

Try 3:
document.getElementById('dropdown').options.length=0;

What's really troubling about 2 and 3 is that they will work fine with a small list but not a large one.

It also times out if I try .remove() of each element in the list.

Has anyone found a good, clean solution to this?  I have created a dynamic auto-populate and the issue is that I need to be able to quickly empty the dropdown and repopulate it based on keyword matching against a large string array.

Thank you.

Webpage with CORS scenario

Hi Team,

We are using web application on IE11, it has a webpage with CORS scenario (i.e. web page gets data from an application in other domain). The application is running HTTPS however other application is running on HTTP (i.e. Mixed content scenario).
This mixed content scenario works fine on other browsers (like Firefox and Chrome) but in IE 11 its not working even though I have changed IE11 setting as om Mycroft site : “Internet Options--- > Security -- > Custom Level -- > Allow Mixed Content: Enable”. After changing these settings I have restarted my browser and system as well but doesn’t work.

We followed steps mentioned on: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/2625928/-only-secure-content-is-displayed-notification-in-internet-explorer-9-or-later

Please note: Works in Firefox and Chrome browser but not in IE11 , Seems it’s bug in IE11 or this is intentional if yes then in what scenario is works.
Platform Information:
IE Version: 11.0.38
Operating System: Windows 7

window.print() prints a blank page after the actual content in IE8

I have an asp.net page which captures user's input and has a save and print button upon submission of the entered information. This print button invokes thewindow.print() javascript command. I have a pdfcamp printer driver installed which in-turn allows the user to save the output as a pdf file. On opening this pdf file i notice an extra blank page after the content page even though the content is more than enough to accommodate in a single page. I observed this only in IE8. Although, this was working fine for IE9, this issue seems to appear only in IE8.  Could someone help me on this issue?

"SCRIPT70: Permission denied" error when trying to access old document from reloaded iframe

$

Hi,

I am facing the issue similar to the one posted in the following thread and i see that its still active but i am not sure if this is fixed as i still see this issue happening while trying to access existing document from a reloaded frame. I see that there is a note from MS that its not being addressed currently but its so many months now and i am not sure if this has still not been addressed. Could some one please let me know if this issue is addressed if not any other generic work arounds ? as i see that most of the workarounds suggested are specific to their use cases and they dont fit in my case. Here is the link

https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/details/802251/script70-permission-denied-error-when-trying-to-access-old-document-from-reloaded-iframe

 this works fine in all browsers except ie11.. it works fine in mozillafirefox, chrome,ie9 and ie10 too. and the frames are of same domain.. there is NOcross  domain access happening.We dont use Jquery and its plain javascript code and those workarounds are not related to the issue that we are seeing.. just the behavior is the same that the reload frame cannot access old document.

Thanks

Kamalesh.

How to report a crash in Internet Explorer

$

How do I report a bug in Internet Explorer 11?

Yes, I know Edge is the new shiny thing, but many enterprises & some individuals still use IE and website-initiated crashes are potential security vulnerabilities which I assume Microsoft still wants to hear about?

These are links which used to be useful:

  • http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactbug/
  • http://connect.microsoft.com/IE

but both redirect to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/collaborate/connect-redirect which doesn't seem to mention IE or offer any replacement location for reporting bugs.

This question https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-iewindows8_1/report-bugs-on-internet-explorer-11/85996050-67a8-46b3-96f1-05480d48fc58 also points to the 'retired' Microsoft Connect.

And there's nothing here about reporting bugs: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/products/internet-explorer

EDIT: I asked on Microsoft support chat and the best answers seemed to be:

  1. on Win 10 report it via the feedback hub
  2. report it on one of the many forums e.g. here or https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums (not sure what the difference is?) or https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11

1. I'm not on Win 10.  2. A forum is a forum, not a bug tracker - will the IE developers actually receive my 'report'?

FileSystem API for Edge Browser

Our web app needs to store a lot of data in user’s browser (about 100 MB or more that would be downloaded from the net). For Chrome, we are using the webkitRequestFileSystem object.

Is there any similar feature in Edge?

We can’t use the Web Storage feature because it is limited to about 10 MB.
