svg app use tag question

Hi

I'm writing a web app using svg. I've got it working as expected in firefox and I'm trying to do the same in IE9. It doesn't work at present in chrome because I've used <use> tags with an xlink attribute referencing elements defined in an external file, ie tags of the form

<use xlink:href="defs.svg#myelement" />

Does IE9 support this type of referencing? If so do you think that the most likely explanation is an IE9 bug or a problem with my code? I can't find any other references to this problem in IE9.
