Install IE 11, remove IE 11 (back to 9), IE can now no longer view jpeg's?

I'm working on a .Net web app that views .jpg files that have come off a scanner. all working fine this am.

I install IE 11 (upgrade from 9) and I hit some interop errors in my code 'An exception of type 'System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException' occurred in System.Drawing.dll ' etc.

So I decide well IE 11 has killed that code. So I remove IE 11 and IE 9 runs fine except it won't open .lpg images. Windows Photo Viewer won't either (Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because the file appears to be damaged or corrupted, or is too large). File is fine, my colleague can view it ok.

Windows Paint can't open the file either. You get the idea. Chrome and FF can open .jpg's but any time I try to run code that uses the default windows route to view .jpg's it won't open.

What do I need to repair on my windows 7 to sort this?

Any help appreciated.

I've tried this from command line. Didn't help:

assoc .jpeg=jpegfile

Thx.
