stop windows 7 rewriting shortcuts on local drives

I have some shortcuts on my desktop pointing to my D: drive which are periodically rewritten to UNC paths, (if I had wanted them in that form I would have written them that way), which cause localy stored web pages to fail to load with the "internet explorer cannot display webpage" error message. The pages open correctly if you navigate to them from thecomputer=>D: =>file.html route.

My question is how do I turn off this automated meddling and what is it about internet explorer that makes UNC paths so difficult for it?
